Our electric Hydrogrow NFT is the most advanced of our planters and is hydroponics in its purest form.
This planter constantly pumps a stream of water and nutrients from the planter reservoir up to the plant roots so that your plants can constantly take up what they need, when they need it. What your plants don’t need drains back into the reservoir.
The nutrients for the Hydrogrow NFT include all the elements plants need for healthy growth. The planter reservoir is completely emptied and refilled every 3 or 4 weeks, so no elements are ever too depleted or too concentrated.
When you transfer your plants from the pot they were started in to the Hydrogrow NFT no extra soil is added, the roots grow along the planter tray forming a thick root mat. Because the roots are not restricted by soil they can access as much oxygen as they need for optimum growth.
This constant access to water, nutrients and oxygen – 3 essentials for growth - results in faster growth, healthier plants and bumper harvests.
Although the Hydrogrow NFT is electric, the power consumption is very low, it costs pennies a day to run and you’ll be more than repaid by the much larger harvests you’ll produce.
What will I receive:
3 space or 5 space planter with pump, nutrients for one season and pH test kit and pH corrector.
Add one of our reservoir heaters to get started 6 weeks early and to keep growing for 6 weeks longer.
Optional heater available:

The Hydrogrow NFT uses the hydroponic method ‘nutrient film technique’, so-called because a constant stream or ‘film’ of nutrients is pumped past the roots. This is the purest form of hydroponics and the most effective because it offers optimum access to and uptake of water, nutrients and oxygen.
Hydroponics is the growing of plants without soil and providing plants with a nutrient feed which contains all the elements that plants need, so that plants are able to focus their energy on growth and fruit production rather than on searching for nutrients and extracting them from soil.
The principle behind all of our hydroponic planters is that improving uptake of water, nutrients and oxygen improves plant health and size of harvest. Our hydroponic planters achieve this in the following ways...
1: Nutrients are dissolved in water rather than requiring the plant to extract them from soil.
2: The water and nutrients are pumped constantly or very frequently directly to the roots - whatever they don’t use drains back into the reservoir.
3: Access to oxygen is optimised by leaving the roots ‘bare’ (Hydrogrow NFT) or using clay pebbles instead of soil (Hydrogrow Solar and Hydrogrow Ebb & Flood) .
Why not use soil? Soil is great for holding water until a plant is next fed and for providing nutrients. On the negative side, plants have to work hard to extract nutrients from soil and these nutrients can become depleted or concentrated. Soil also restricts access to oxygen because it becomes compacted when water is added. By pumping a complete hydroponic feed dissolved in water to the plant roots we are able to ensure the plants can always access what they need but without having to restrict the roots in soil.
Behind the science - Greenhouse Sensation & Hydroponics
John Molyneux, our founder and Chairman, was one of the pioneers of hydroponics. He was studying roots for a plant biology PhD project in the 1970s when it occurred to him that hydroponics, which was and still is used by commercial growers because it produces much improved yields, could be adapted for home-greenhouse use
He designed a planter that would provide all the benefits of hydroponics on a smaller scale, bought a workshop in which to make the planters and the rest, as they say, is history. The first planter John designed was the Hydrogrow NFT, launched in 1976, it is essentially the same now as it was then, great design stands the test of time.
Our product range has expended, our planters are now sold all over the world, the factory is bigger and we are a much larger team, but the principle of using horticultural expertise to develop products that help anyone to grow better plants is still the same. We still manufacture our planters in Lancashire and John is still our Chairman and continues to lead our product development projects, demand extensive trials and generally keep us all in check.
John’s book ‘A Practical Guide to NFT’ has been reprinted 5 times, the late BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Geoff Hamilton was so impressed by John’s book and NFT planter that he contributed the Introduction to the book and commented:
‘The most comprehensive book yet written on NFT for all. Here is all you need to know about a method of growing that is not only highly productive, but a lot of fun too. I can thoroughly recommend it.”
"Incredible results" Kitchen Garden magazine - after growing in one of our Hydrogrow planters.
"If there are any growers out there interested in hydroponics then look no further than Greenhouse Sensation, I wish I had 20 years ago, as the results we've had with these kits are truly brilliant." Robert Ballantyne - Commercial Grower
