A complete Vegetable Plot perfect for -  Radishes, Lettuce, Spring Onion and leafy salad, Tomatoes, Aubergine, Sweet Peppers, French Beans, Runner Beans, Cucumber and Peas

The Patio Allotment combines our best selling Quadgrow with a handy salad and herb planter, giving you a complete veg plot. Place tall cropping plants such as tomatoes, beans and cucumbers in the 4 x 11 Litre pots and use the central planter for salads and non-woody herbs.

Grow salads and herbs outdoors all year in the Patio Allotment by adding the mini greenhouse option which protects plants from frosts, as featured in  Kitchen Garden & Grow Your Own magazines.

As with all of our planters, our handy Patio Allotment keeps your plants perfectly fed and watered at all times thanks to the large SmartReservoir and FeederMat controlled watering, so that your plants are healthier and produce bigger harvests.

The FeederMats pull the water up from the 40Litre SmartReservoir as and when your plants need it, meaning your plants always have the constant access to water and nutrients that they need. The Patio Allotment is very simple to use, just add compost, seeds or young plants, and keep the reservoir topped-up.

As salads and herbs prefer not to be moved after sowing you can sow seeds directly into the central planter and even add the lid to give them a head start.

The Patio Allotment, like all of our Soil Planters, produces healthier plants and bigger harvests by providing your plants with constant access to water without ever over-watering.

Plants need to constantly replace the water they use, but overwatering prevents roots from accessing oxygen and is actually the number one cause of plant demise.

What happens when we overwater?
If soil is over-watered the pores in the soil become blocked and the roots can't access the air in the soil. The lack of oxygen means that the roots can't take up water or nutrients. A plant weakened by overwatering becomes susceptible to disease, particularly fungal attacks. If the over-watering is repeated the roots suffocate and die.

What happens when we underwater?
Plants use water for cell growth and for overall health, but they also need water for the following specific functions, which are compromised when we under-water.

Transporting minerals and nutrients
Plants use water to move minerals and nutrients from the roots around the plant, and to move glucose (from photosynthesis) from leaves to other cells in the plant.

Photosynthesis
About 5% of the water absorbed by plants is used to make glucose during the photosynthesis process.

Transpiration
As well as water, plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis (they combine water, carbon dioxide and light to produce glucose). They access this carbon dioxide through microscopic openings on their leaves and stems. These openings are called ‘stomata’. The stomata open and close regularly to absorb carbon dioxide and as they do this they also release water, this release of water is called transpiration. If the plant is short of water it won't open its stomato as frequently and therefore it won't photosynthesise as much. Sunny, hot weather increases the rate of transpiration, so plants need more water in these conditions.

It's no wonder then that incorrect watering causes most gardening problems, including blossom end rot and fruit splitting.

good experience Review by Anon
Very friendly company, prompt delivery and useful advice. Well-made and it works, I bought this after a good experience using 2 Windowrows last year, because I usually kill my plants with erratic watering. It's also great that I don't have to arrange for someone to water my plants when I'm on holiday. (Posted on 21/10/2011)

Perfect for schools Review by Rachel Donahue- Crichton Carbon Centre
With the use of the Vitogrow, pupils are able to learn and see the major role they can play in reducing their carbon footprint by growing their own greens.. (Posted on 23/09/2011)
Great Review by Phil (teacher)
Thanks for the Vitogrow Mini Allotment. It's filled with chillies (from poblano to tepin), tomatoes (pomodoro and brandywine), land cress, carrots, fenugreek, gherkin and runner beans! I already have one child who wants to be a gardener, inspipred by this gardening project!

I'm amazed how the children are so willing to sample the various salad leaves, including the land cress which is incredibly bitter. I'm sure if they appeared on their lunch plates, they would turn their noses up!

It's a shame I can't capture the smell in our greenhouse - the fenugreek is very strong. We'll also be growing okra and cumin, traditional Asian foods.

The smell of the fenugreek is pretty intense in the greenhouse at the moment, and our staff are looking forward to using it in their cooking!
