At first glance the Rain & Drain looks like a normal planter, but it produces much bigger harvests thanks to the timer-controlled pump and the pebbles which are used instead of soil.

Your plants will be watered up to 15 x per day, with any excess water quickly draining through the pebbles and back into the reservoir.

The frequent watering makes the Rain & Drain ideal for growing tropical edibles such as ginger, cape gooseberry, lemongrass, melon pear, papaya, babaco and musk melon because you can set the timer to mimic the conditions of a tropical environment without the risk of over-watering.

Plants in a Rain & Drain are never short of water or nutrients and the free-draining pebbles mean the roots have excellent access to oxygen and are never over-watered.Every time the plants are watered and the excess water drains into the reservoir fresh air is pulled down into the root area giving the roots an extra boost. As a result plants grow more quickly and produce 3x bigger harvests.

Our instructions include guidance on how to choose the right timer setting, but if you have any questions our Gardening Angels are always happy to provide help over the phone, email or Facebook.

Because you won't be using soil you'll need the plant feed that we include instead. The plant feed that we provide includes all of the elements that a plant needs for healthy growth.

You’ll empty and refill the planter reservoir every 3 or 4 weeks, so no nutrient elements are ever too depleted or too concentrated. The plant feed will last a season and replacements are £14.99 for a two year supply.

The power consumption is very low, the Rain & Drain costs pennies a day to run and you’ll be more than repaid by the huge harvests you’ll produce.

Not Sure?
Taking the step up to growing using a timer can be a bit daunting, but it really is easy, if you have any questions why not give us a call on 0845 602 3774 or send us an email info@greenhousesensation.co.uk and we’ll be happy to help.

Your Rain & Drain Planter includes everything you need to grow your own tropical plants:

  • Rain & Drain planter with pump and timer
  • Jargon-free instructions
  • pH testing kit and pH corrector

Free Extras worth £15.00:

  • 6 litres of reusable clay pebbles - to be used instead of soil
  • 5 Litres of concentrated plant nutrients - sufficient for one season

Ask us a question

The Rain & Drain is ideal for growing tropical and exotic plants because it can be timed to automatically feed and water plants several times a day and it provides roots with superb access to oxygen, so that you get healthy plants and bumper harvests.

Many exotic and tropical plants need a lot of water, but if you provide too much water the roots become water-logged (making them less efficient at taking up water and eventually causing the roots to rot). In the Rain & Drain plants receive small amounts of water very frequently, the pebbles (used instead of soil and included with your Rain & Drain) can’t become water-logged. Whatever the plant doesn’t need drains back into the reservoir and this drain action has the added benefit of pulling oxygen into the root area.

The complete nutrient feed that we include provides your plants with all the nutrients they need. By emptying and refilling the reservoir each month you can be certain the nutrient mix never becomes depleted or too concentrated as often happens when growing long term plants in containers.

This is a great planter for anyone who really wants to get to know their plants and how their needs change as they grow. You can monitor pH levels (pH testing and correcting kit included as well as instructions).

Hydroculture - seeing is believing! Review by Bill
Quality
"I'm a home grower of chillies. I used to grow 10 or 12 plants from seed each year in my conservatory. When I stumbled upon a Greenhouse Sensation blog with a picture of hundreds of chillies off a single plant, I didn't really believe it.

I decided to give it a go though, and called Greenhouse Sensation to find out what was best for me. The time they took to explain things to me was amazing. I bought a single ""Tropical Planter"" (called ""Ebb & Flow"" at the time). I now only grow four chilli plants each year, and get loads more chillies than I did before from 10 or 12.

I now fill my freezer, make loads of pickled chillies, and still end up giving away hundreds of chillies to family, friends, and colleagues - all from a single hydroculture planter.

I would never have done this without seeing the Greenhouse sensation blog and, more importantly, without the patient help and guidance from the Greenhouse Sensation staff. Many thanks." (Posted on 13/07/2015)
Excellent service as well as product Review by Simon
My large Ebb & Flood is great and I just wanted to thank you for the extra copy of the instructions that you sent in the post. Greenhouse Sensation's after-sales service is excellent. It's great to deal with a company that looks after its customers so well. (Posted on 07/12/2012)
This planter is a dream to use Review by Matt, Simpsons Seeds
This planter is a dream to use. Crops grown in it dramatically out performed those grown in growbags, which needed much more care, esp on watering in hot weather (Posted on 05/12/2012)

We’d love to get your feedback!
