Vivigrow (previously called Hydrogrow)

Competitive gardeners will love this advanced planter which produces bigger harvests because the roots grow in super-aerated water instead of being constrained in wet soil.

A small pump in the planter keeps water and nutrients moving over the plant roots, so they have constant access to everything they need.

"Incredible results"
Kitchen Garden Magazine - After growing in one of our Vivigrow planters.

Liberating roots from soil matters because wet soil contains very little air. The less air the roots can access the less water and nutrients they can absorb and provide to the rest of the plant. That’s why over-watering is the leading cause of greenhouse plant death.

In the ViviGrow there’s no wet soil and the planter’s air-inlet and pump keep the water perfectly aerated. The pump in the planter keeps a stream of water and nutrients moving over the roots. So plants are never short of air, water or nutrients, and there’s no risk of blossom end rot –you’re simply guaranteed bumper harvests.

We’d say that’s pretty clever, but our mums told us not to boast!

Because you won’t be using soil you’ll need the plant feed that we include instead. The plant feed that we provide includes all of the elements that a plant needs for healthy growth.

You’ll empty and refill the planter reservoir every 3 or 4 weeks, so no nutrient elements are ever too depleted or too concentrated. The plant feed will last a season and replacements are £14.99 for a two year supply (don’t forget, you will be saving on compost!).

Although the Vivigrow is electric, the power consumption is very low, it costs pennies a day to run and you’ll be more than repaid by the much larger harvests you’ll produce.

What will I receive?

- 3 space or 5 space planter

Optional Reservoir Heater: Using a heater in the reservoir of your planter enables you to extend the growing season - plant-out sooner and harvest for longer.

Heater for 5 plant Vivigrow - £29.00

Optional Cube Caps available (the white blocks in the photos)

The Vivigrow planter pumps a constant stream of water and nutrients past your plants’ roots. This encourages the plants to take up more water, nutrients and oxygen than if they were grown in a traditional container, the ground or a raised bed.

The principle behind this planter is that improving uptake of water, nutrients and oxygen improves plant health and size of harvest. It achieves this in the following ways...

1: Plant nutrients are dissolved in water rather than requiring the plant to extract them from soil.

2: Constant access to water and nutrients is provided so the plants are never lacking anything they need - whatever they don’t use drains back into the reservoir.

3:The roots are left bare so they have excellent access to oxygen

Why not use soil? Soil is great for holding water until a plant is next fed and for providing nutrients. On the negative side, plants have to work hard to extract nutrients from soil and these nutrients can become depleted or concentrated. Soil also restricts access to oxygen because it becomes compacted when water is added. By dissolving a complete feed in water and pumping this to the roots constantly we are able to ensure the plants can always access what they need without having to restrict the roots in soil.

Behind the science - Greenhouse Sensation & Hydroponics
The Vivigrow is a ‘hydroponic’ growing technique. John Molyneux, our founder and Chairman, was one of the pioneers of hydroponics. He was studying roots for a plant biology PhD project in the 1970s when it occurred to him that hydroponics, which was and still is used by commercial growers because it produces much improved yields, could be adapted for home-greenhouse use.

He designed a planter that would provide all the benefits of hydroponics on a smaller scale, bought a workshop in which to make the planters and the rest, as they say, is history. The first planter John designed was what is now the Vivigrow, originally launched in 1976, it is essentially the same now as it was then, great design stands the test of time.

Our product range has expanded, our planters are now sold all over the world, the factory is bigger and we are a larger team, but the principle of using horticultural expertise to develop products that help anyone to grow better plants is still the same. We still manufacture our planters in Lancashire and John is still our Chairman and continues to lead our product development projects, demand extensive trials and generally keep us all in check.

John’s book ‘A Practical Guide to NFT’ has been reprinted 5 times, the late BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Geoff Hamilton was so impressed by John’s book and NFT planter that he contributed the Introduction to the book and commented:
The most comprehensive book yet written on NFT for all. Here is all you need to know about a method of growing that is not only highly productive, but a lot of fun too. I can thoroughly recommend it.”

I'm a convert Review by Mark
Quality
It's still less than one month now since panting out in my quadgrow and NFT system. The results to date have been amazing in terms of the plants really establishing a strong vegetative system. I have never seen as thick a stem as on both the NFT and Quadgrow.
Very little difference between the two currently. Also chillies doing well in the Chilligrow system.

I am going to try to send you some pics. I have taken 3/4 pics every week inc the start date on the 7th April. I cant think of a better way of selling than by showing the transformation in less than one month.

What a brilliant product idea for home use ! Exceptional customer service ! Review by amarni

Order placed before 10.30 am yesterday - received @ 09.30 am this morning! Can't wait to get out into the garden and set up this enclosed, recycling feeding system!

The customer service adviser was able to answer all my questions and explained the detail in clear, understandable English. I was not tricked into purchasing more than I required, but, of course I will ordering more intelliegent thought out products from this company.

One thing: Can Greenhouse Sensation allow for the videos to be viewed full screen.

Now going to set my Vivigrow up! (Posted on 03/05/2013)
Bumper Crops Review by Naomi
Quality
I bought my husband one for his birthday and wanted to send you some pictures of the tomatoes and melons that he has grown.

The melons ripen really well (the smell in the greenhouse is amazing!) and are so juicy and delicious...although we are bias we have shared them with friends who have all agreed!

The second crop are huge, and as you can see from the pictures my husband has improvised some supports from supermarket orange bags for fear of them dropping off of the plant due to their weight! We cant wait for this bigger crop to ripen now!

The tomatoes have also been amazing! We have had such a bumper crop of a wonderful tasting fruit and my weekly food bill has gone down considerably as we are eating so much produce from the garden!

I hope that you like the pictures, it is quite hard to get everything into one photo as the plants have gone crazy and take up so much room so I have taken a few!

Worth the money Review by Paul
I started using your NFT kits about 9 years ago, So I've certainly been getting my moneys worth. There so easy to maintain as well, I just give the channels a wipe down at the end of the year and clean the pump filters every so often. (Posted on 14/08/2012)
Amazing yield Review by Matt Simpson
Truly amazing systems, I have 10 of them and would have more if I had space!! I get a much larger yield using NFT than growing in pots. I used to get blssom end rot on my tomatoes, but not anymore and my oldest one is 10 years old and still going strong.Worth every penny and then some. (Posted on 03/08/2012)
Huge yields and no aphid damage Review by AnnieAnnie
We are growing chillies in ours and have had a great result in our first year. Compared to the same plant planted in a pot, we got about four times as many chillies from the hydroponic. In addition, the plants were not bothered by slugs, snails or aphids as the others were. This was a huge unexpected bonus. We are definitely buying another one this year and they are easy to use and pay for themselves quickly. The people at GS are also really friendly and helpful and we had a really informative visit to see the greenhouse. It's exactly the sort of smaller company that we wanted to support and their customer service has been great. Happily recommend the company and the product. Looking forward to using our vitapod now :) (Posted on 10/11/2011)
The difference is amazing. Review by Mr K Chadwick
The difference is amazing. This is the first time I have ever grown in a hydroponic planter and I have found the planter easy to set up and run. Thanks to the Gardening Angels who answered all my questions.” Jeremy.
“The difference is clearly visable, the hydro grown plants are nearly twice the size of the grow bag grown plants; with stronger, thicker stems and healthier leaves. All because they receive exactly the right amount of water, nutrients and oxygen, when they need it.

Really works Review by julian
The GS100 was the first Greenhouse Sensation product that I tried. I grew a Chinense Capsicum plant and it turned into a monster. The root system at the end of the year was a two inch thick mat of pure white roots. The plant was obviously really happy. (Posted on 21/09/2011)
I'll never use growbags again Review by Andy Rook, Chorley
I will never even think about using growbags again. I work for a living and have a family so I don't have the time to spend watering several times a day. The GS100 takes the effort out of growing. (Posted on 19/09/2011)

Very good service and always helpful. I had a few problems at first, but now all right.

Staggering Difference Review by Jan, Wiltshire
The difference was staggering. The Hydrogrow tomatoes stormed away, root growth in 48 hours, whilst the others in their growbag did nowhere near as well. My crop from the GS200 has been substantial, unlike the growbag.

Outclasses others by miles Review by Jan
For the better part of a decade, I've been so impressed by the performance of my GS200s and Vitopod Propagators from Greenhouse Sensation that I have quite literally built a greenhouse around them.

From germination on, they are my mainstay for producing superb bumper crops, year after year, with minimal effort relative to the huge rewards. Using them really is an annual delight. The NFT Hydrogrow is a superb and easily maintained system, even in the hottest of Summers - I recommend using with the Holiday Watering option.

I've done comparisons with growbags and pots. The GS200 outclasses all other options by miles - my crops of cucumbers and melons are enormous, tomatoes gun away but the most impressive by far, to me, is the performance of sweet peppers - I have had simply stunning results."

I used £5.00 worth of chilli seeds in my five plant NFT GS200 and must have got around £300- £400 worth or fruit in return (Posted on 17/09/2011)
Amazing Difference Review by Jeremy
I have had my GS100 up and running for a month now. Here is an image of two Bhut Jolokia chillis at 17 weeks. It is amazing the difference. This is the first time I have ever grown hydro and have found the system easy to set up and run. Thanks to the 'angels' who answered all my newbie questions
