This lovely handmade wooden habitat will encourage bumblebees to nest in your garden.
The sliding lid allows you to have a look inside the box to observe the colony and vent holes in the rear of box prevent condensation.
Queen bumblebees often make their colony after a mouse has nested, so if you attract a mouse in year one, this is good news and will make the box more attractive to a queen bumblebee in year 2. Be sure to leave the mouse nest in place.
Bumblebees are not naturally aggressive and it takes a lot to provoke them. They will only sting if their nest is threatened or if you squeeze them, sit on them, or stand on them.
If they do feel threatened by you they will 'tell' you. They do this by raising one of their middle legs in the air. When you back away, they relax and put their leg back down again - but if you go closer (and if they are unhappy about this) they will lift another leg in the air. If you go closer still - they will lift two legs up vertically in the air and turn onto their back to show you their sting! This is called 'posturing' but very rarely leads to them actually stinging you. Most male bumblee bees don't have a sting at all.
