Lacewing are very effective predators of aphid, thrips, red spider mite and moth eggs. They fully deserve the nickname "aphid lion" as a single insect can consume 100-600 aphids in its lifetime.
It is in the larval stage that lacewing feed on aphids, as adults they feed on nectar, pollen and honeydew. During the larval stage they can eat up to 50 greenfly/aphids each day! Adult lacewings lay their eggs in the spring and produce about 20 eggs per day. Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves, these then develop into the various larval stages of the lacewing before turning into adults.
Ladybird populations are declining in the UK. Both Ladybird adults and their Ladybird larvae are voracious eaters and can make a real difference to greenfly infestations both under glass and outside.
Adult Ladybirds lay up to 50 yellow Ladybird eggs per day under the leaves of plants and up to 1500 in their Ladybird lifetime to continue the cycle of natural pest control.
About the pests lacewing and ladybird can control
Aphids tend to colonise shoot tips, flower buds and the underside of younger leaves. Signs of an aphid problem include a sticky residue on foliage, stems and fruits, which eventually results in the growth of black mould.
Red Spider Mite
Red spider mite can be difficult to control as it breeds rapidly in warm conditions and some strains have developed resistance to some insecticides. Signs of red spider mite include mottled leaves and early leaf loss. It specially attacks cuucmbers, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, peach, orchids and fuchsia.
Signs of a problem with thrips include silver patches and black dots on leaves, buds failing to open, brown petals and misshapen, curled new growth. Thrips attach most plants.
