How to Grow Your Own Food with a Self-Watering Planter

Do you struggle growing your own fruit and vegetables in your pots and growbags? Do you find it difficult to keep on top of watering to ensure your plants are getting the required water and nutrients needed for healthy growth? If so, you are certainly not alone.

This is why our team of horticultural experts designed the Quadgrow Self-Watering Planter. Self-watering planters are a perfect alternative to growing veg in growbags and standard pots.

In this blog we will discuss how our award-winning self-watering planter can simplify growing your own food. Furthermore, you will discover the magic of using a self-watering pot to generate bumper crops of your favourite tomatoes, sweet peppers, aubergines, beans, cucumbers and other tall cropping plants in 2021!

How does this self-watering planter work?

Our Quadgrow Self-Watering Planter keeps your plants perfectly watered for up to two weeks at a time, thanks to its generous 30 litre SmartReservoir and FeederMat system. This means that you can go away for a weekend and not worry that your precious plants are lacking their source of water and nutrients for healthy growth.

Each of the Quadgrow’s pots have a FeederMat, which pulls water up from the SmartReservoir through into holes at the bottom of the pot into the soil around the roots as and when the plants need it. Thanks to its perfect watering, the soil is never too dry or waterlogged, resulting in better access to oxygen, fuelling faster growth with helps you generate 2x bigger harvests.

Your plants will be stronger and healthier because there's no risk of any erratic watering, which often causes root rot, split fruit and blossom end rot. The roots also have better access to oxygen, which fuels faster growth.

Top compost tip: we recommend using a good quality multi-purpose compost. The most expensive is not necessary in our opinion due to the water having added nutrients.

How do you assemble this self-watering planter?

The Quadgrow all comes in one box, containing: 2x reservoirs, 2x support trays, 2x tank covers and 4x pots with free complete Nutrigrow plant nutrients which will help your plants grow to their optimum potential in perfect balance. You can expect to take no longer than 10 mins in setting up and then to pot your plants on, preferably a flat surface.

Quadgrow Self-Watering Planter Add-On Accessories

Mulch Cap & Cane Support Kit

The Mulch Cap Kit with Cane Support accessory reduces evaporation from the surface of your compost so that you get healthier roots in the upper surface of the compost. These mulch caps prevent flies such as sciarid flies lay eggs in the compost so that you don’t get the larvae eating the roots. These caps also precent algae on the surface as well.

The Mulch Caps also include a grommet that grips your cane support in place on both sides of the base which is useful to encourage strong and sturdy growth of your crop especially once it grows in size.

Solar Panel Conversion Kit

The Solar Panel Conversion Kit can be placed on your planter or tied up higher in your greenhouse if you wanted to catch more sun.

This is connected to a pump in the Quadgrow, whereby the lead goes into the reservoir and is connected to a manifold which screws to the side of the reservoir with dripper lines that feed into the pot and the compost.

This then means, that when the sun comes out it powers the solar panelled pump which pumps the nutrient solution so that your plants get drip irrigated. This gives your plants the extra food and water they need when its sunnier.

Top Tip: When using this solar conversion kit, ensure you use a more free draining growing media. Our kit comes with Hydrococo which is a mixture of coir fibre and clay pebbles as a heat based compost would most likely get too wet. This in turn will help you generate a perfect root zone.

Water Butt Link Kit

You can use a float valve which pops into the entrance hatch of the planter which has a drip line connected to a water butt. You can fill your water butt which will then keep your reservoir topped up in the full position. This will enable you to go on holiday safe in the knowledge that your plants are still going to get fed and watered.
