Greenhouse Update - 7th May

Friday, 8 May 2015 17:21:15 Europe/London

The plants in our Lancashire greenhouse have been thriving thanks to the sunniest April on record. Our tomato and chilli plants have experienced incredible growth and started producing plenty of fruit and flowers.

The tomatoes in our Vivigrow Planter have flourished; there are now 80 tomatoes across our 2 planters. We have spotted 34 tomatoes on our Sungold Tomato; the most on any plant in the greenhouse. The Sungold typically produces very high yields quickly, so we are very pleased with how well it’s growing so far.

Our star tomato of the week is the Cristal Tomato, which has grown an incredible 39cm in just one week! There are now 11 beautiful looking tomatoes growing on this plant, we can’t wait for them to ripen!

ChilligrowOur Bolivian Rainbow Chillies have experienced healthy, consistent growth in our Chilligrow Planter. These colourful chillies are full of flavour with a pleasant fiery kick measuring around 30,000 – 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). These are dwarf variety chillies, so will not grow particularly tall but will produce plenty of chillies!

There are new arrivals in our Greenhouse! The Cristal Tomatoes in our Duogrow Planter have made the move from the greenhouse to our Polytunnel, making room for our Sweet Peppers! We will be growing F1 Jumbo Sweet Peppers in another Duogrow Planter. We have also set up a 5 Plant Vivigrow, growing Corno Di Toro Rosso, F1 Jumbo and Big Red Peppers.

It is great fun to grow your own sweet peppers: they are packed with flavour, free of heat and look wonderful. A tasty pepper can add a brilliant boost of flavour to just about anything, including zesty salads, chilli or Bolognese. These peppers were first sown into our Vitopod Heated Propagator on 3rd February and are now all between 44 and 56cm tall.

Growing Guernsey Babaco PapayaAfter one week in our Quadgrow Root Veg Planter, we have spotted the first of our Lady Christl Potato sprouts! There are 3 sprouts in total, the tallest of which is 2cm. These are first early potatoes, so we are looking forward to a brilliant harvest in around 10-12 weeks’ time.

Our Kiwifruit is continuing to climb in it’s Tropical Planter. It is now up to 99cm tall with plenty of big, beautiful leaves.

The Guernsey Babaco Papaya has also started producing more fruit! There are around a dozen small Babacos forming and a few giant Babacos that are just days away from ripening.
