How to Keep a Greenhouse Warm in Winter

Winter can be very harsh on plants, even the ones in your greenhouse!

Rising energy costs and increasing concerns about the environment can give you pause - but don’t worry! There are simple ways to keep your greenhouse warm this winter without breaking the bank or destroying the environment.

How to Keep a Greenhouse Warm in Winter

You can easily keep your greenhouse warm with low running costs by using greenhouse tube heaters. These let you keep a constant temperature in the greenhouse - all you need to do is plug them in on the floor or mounting them on a wall! Give your plants a steady background heat at just £0.005 per hour/per foot.

If you’re looking for a 24-hour heating solution, a greenhouse fan heater with thermostat will distribute air quickly and evenly. The optional digital thermostat lets you set the temperature you want, from 0℃ to 40℃, and it comes with a 1.5-metre long sensor and a plug socket.

This fan heater meets very rigorous safety standards; its IPX4 rating means that it’s splash-proof in all directions and it can be utilised in damp rooms.

Greenhouse electric heaters can also be used 24 hours, offering a temperature range of 0℃ to 26℃. You can switch the power outputs from three options, 1kW, 1.8kW, and 2.8kW, for a cost-effective solution. You can mount it on a wall or on the floor - and its IPX4 rating gives you confidence about it being spray waterproof. Give your greenhouse even heat distribution with a high rate of air circulation of 450m3/hour.

Hint: A greenhouse thermometer can let you accurately monitor the temperature in your greenhouse, all year around. A hygrometer will also monitor humidity levels.

Horticultural bubble wrap is built to withstand UV light and its stronger than packaging bubble wrap. The bigger bubbles provide better insulation while letting in the most light, offering a double glazing effect that allows for less energy consumption. Always make sure to clean your greenhouse windows before attaching it to minimise light loss.

Tip: Use Corner and Extender Clips to better attach the horticultural bubble wrap to your greenhouse!

Pop Up Greenhouses

pop up greenhouse can be a great choice if you need a warm microclimate for your plants. Whether you don’t own a full greenhouse or you need just a bit more extra space, a Grow Dome or a Wall-Mounted Greenhouse will do the trick.

The Grow Dome is a 180° mini polytunnel with a PVC cover, built to last and treated to prevent both yellowing and UV light deterioration. The frame is built to be robust, made from light but very strong, flexible fibreglass poles. There are four mesh-covered air vents that help prevent mould growth and control humidity.

You can give your plants fresh air easily, as the cover can be opened from both sides. The cover stays in place when you open it so you can have easy access to your plants.

The Wall-Mounted Greenhouse attaches to the side of a wall to keep it in place. Similarly to the Grow Dome, it’s built to last and provide your plants with the perfect growing environment. Both pop up greenhouse solutions allow for greenhouse staging.
